Research suggests that diabetes in middle aged and senior dogs is on the rise.
There are a number of indicators which may lead you to suspect something is not quite right with your beloved furry friend:
They tend to drink and urinate more often
Lethargy
Decreased strength in their legs
Obesity
Weight loss
Cloudy eyes or Blindness
Dull and lacklustre coat
It is most important that the testing, diagnosis and relevant treatment for diabetes is sought from your vet. Diabetes is a chronic disease and must be well managed.
Diet is a very important factor in the management of diabetes. A raw meat-based high-protein diet with the correct nutrients and fibre will definitely go a long way towards stabilising blood sugar levels which can fluctuate quite drastically, in particular when associated with carbohydrate rich kibble. Raw diets also support balanced weight control and metabolism.
We all like to give our furry ones a treat too, but steer clear of the commercial one’s, they are known to be full of calories and sugar, which is definitely not recommended for a diabetic dog. Rather offer something natural like raw carrots, blueberries, liver biltong.
If your fur kid is not yet enjoying a Raw diet, please feel free to contact us so we can offer recommendations on how best to switch them over.
